Hi! Regarding your article on caring for doc martens, when applying dubbin is it best to start with a clean surface? Or is that only when using the wonder balsam? Thanks!

Hello! Ideally you want a clean surface when applying any product because you’re sealing in and rubbing around whatever impurities there are on the surface of the boot. A bit of house dust may not matter, but if you’re talking about salt or mud buildup I’d hesitate to apply dubbin without thoroughly cleaning the leather first.

If the boots have been kept relatively clean and you want to do a quick application before going out into some bad weather for the first time you can get away without the cleaning perhaps.

      Hope that helps! Good luck!
